February 2017 Newsletter

Dear AHA Foundation Supporter,

I hope that your 2017 is off to a wonderful start. At the AHA Foundation, we are excited to see state legislatures taking on important issues such as child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). One such bill the AHA Foundation is proud to support is a bill that would criminalize FGM in the state of Massachusetts. We are thrilled to report that the bill is quickly gaining momentum, but there is still much work to be done. Read here to learn more about the bill and how you can help push it forward.

A positive aspect to the current polarizing political climate is that it seems as if more and more people are looking to be engaged on the issues they are passionate about. However, finding a way to take effective action that has a meaningful impact can sometimes feel intimidating. This month, we have put together a how-to guide of simple actions you can take on behalf of women and girls. Whether you have 5 minutes or an hour, there is something you can do. These seemingly small actions taken together create a significant contribution to the fight against honor violence.

Are you interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the AHA Foundation? Let one of our interns take you through a typical day in her life with us. She also announces that we are seeking new interns. Read her article here and share it to help us reach the candidates passionate about making a difference in the fight against women’s oppression.

Thank you,

Ayaan Hirsi Ali

P.S. Within the last few weeks my analysis and views were shared in two publications. Huffington Post featured my reaction to President Trump’s executive decision to ban immigration from several countries. The Australian featured my oped in which I argue, and practice, my belief that the only way to resolve the fundamental challenge to women’s rights posed by sharia law is to criticize its problematic aspects openly.
