Saudi editor Jamal Khashoggi resigns from of al-Watan

A leading Saudi Arabian journalist has resigned from his post as editor-in-chief of one of the country's more progressive newspapers: Jamal Khashoggi was editor of al-Watan which published an opinion piece questioning Salafism, a form of Islam at the heart of the Saudi state.

On NPR, Muslim reformer Asra Nomani warns of "Jihad cool" and of the harsh criticism of the West in some American mosques: "I can tell you that in my mosque in West Virginia, I heard it every Friday from these sermons that would be spoken by PhD graduate students, by engineering professors, folks who were getting all of the advantages of our open society and yet, on Thursday night downloading from Saudi websites sermons that basically said, don't imitate the path, the disbelievers, meaning the West: And this is exactly that slippery slope that ends up with something like this Times Square bomb attack - attempt."

Saudi Arabia to introduce minimum marriage age after 11-year-old wins divorce

Saudi Arabia could introduce a minimum age of marriage for the first time after a girl who married aged 11 won a divorce from her 80-year-old husband: the girl, now 12, has been fighting her case in the town of Buraidah, near the capital Riyadh and was married to her father's elderly cousin last year, with a dowry of £14,500 paid and the marriage consummated.
