Libya's Gaddafi urges jihad against Switzerland

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi called on Thursday for a "jihad" or armed struggle against Switzerland, saying it was an infidel state that was destroying mosques: "Any Muslim in any part of the world who works with Switzerland is an apostate, is against (the Prophet) Mohammad, God and the Koran," Gaddafi said during a meeting in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi to mark the Prophet's birthday.

Justice minister revises anti-burqa statement

Swiss Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf has revised an earlier statement that she would ban the burqa in Switzerland: she said that as a European woman, she had a problem with the burqa as a symbol, but that she wasn't currently concerned about it because of the few women wearing it in Switzerland, most are tourists--with the caveat that if too many began wearing it in future, a ban could be discussed on the basis of proportionality.

Cautious welcome to anti-forced marriage plan

Swiss campaigners against forced marriage have welcomed government plans to impose tougher penalties on those found guilty of imposing forced marriage, but they are unhappy the cabinet has stopped short of making the practice a criminal offence in its own right: the charity Surgir ("Rise up" in English) estimates that thousands of women in Switzerland are trapped in forced marriages, often suffering severe mental and physical abuse.
