French National Assembly Approves Burqa Ban

The lower house of the French parliament has voted in favor of banning the burqa in public, the female Muslim veil which covers the entire face and body: with broad cross-party support for banning the burqa, lawmakers at the French National Assembly voted in favor of the bill by an overwhelming 336 votes for and just one against the measure.

France denies citizenship to man who refused to shake hands of women

A Moroccan man who refused to shake hands with a French female official and whose wife wears the full Islamic veil has been denied French citizenship, the immigration ministry said Friday: the man, who has been living in France since 1999 and married a French woman in 2004, failed to "assimilate into French society" and displayed a "discriminatory attitude toward women," said the ministry.

Woman fined for erratic driving caused by veil

Police in the city of Vaucluse (Southern France) have fined a woman driver for erratic driving caused by her niqab, a veil that leaves only the eyes exposed, just weeks after a similar incident sparked a major political row: "[The headscarf] was bothering the driver in her maneuvers, it was obvious she could not see a thing," commanding officer Charles Bourillon said; police gave the driver a ticket for 22 euros ($31) for driving with a reduced field of vision.

French Muslim 'polygamist' charged with welfare fraud

A French Muslim butcher at the centre of a firestorm over polygamy was charged on Wednesday with welfare fraud and his four companions will also face charges, a prosecutor said: Lies Hebbadj, who runs a halal butcher shop in the western city of Nantes, has fathered 15 children and soon will have 17 with the women who received benefits over the past three years totaling 175,000 euros.

France to bar polygamy, sharia on Mayotte islands

New polygamous marriages and sharia courts will be banned on France's Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte when it becomes a department of the French state next year, according to a draft ordinance presented on Wednesday: Mayotte, an island territory between Mozambique and Madagascar, will also end repudiation, the traditional Muslim divorce, and raise the minimum marriage age for females from 16 to 18, according to a statement by the cabinet.
