Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has banned female genital mutilation (FGM) in the country, effective immediately. The campaign to end the practice in Gambia was started by a young activist, Jaha Dukureh. 76% of women in Gambia has been subjected to FGM making President Jammeh’s announcement especially significant. Gambia joins Nigeria and 18 other countries in Africa that have banned the practice.
