A N.C. Senate bill that would ban female genital mutilation cleared its first committee step Tuesday.

Senate Bill 9 was filed Jan. 31 by state Sen. Joyce Krawiec, R-Forsyth. It was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Feb. 4.

The bill now goes to the Senate Rules and Operations Committee.

Krawiec said she filed the bill “because we must protect our girls from this abuse of being mutilated … and this barbaric procedure.”
