In early 2015, psychotherapist and female genital mutilation (FGM) campaigner Leyla Hussein approached photographer Jason Ashwood with the idea of a photo project that celebrated FGM survivors as beautiful, confident, and proud of their achievements, despite their suffering. The result was The Face of Defiance, a series of portraits of and interviews with UK women who have survived FGM. See these beautiful and powerful images here:
