Female genital mutilation “re-emerging” in Somalia

Female genital mutilation is becoming more common in one region of Somalia, it has been claimed. Head of the Women’s Development Network Lul Madar was quoted by Canadian charity SOS Children’s Villages Canada as saying the practice seems to be “re-emerging” in an area of the country called Puntland.  Women’s groups in the self-declared region are now lobbying the authorities to act on a law banning the tradition, with Ms Madar explaining that even if such rules would not completely stop the practice, “it will have a fear effect and can be used by activists to fight FGM/C”.
