AHA Foundation is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic, preventable death of a one-month-old infant on August 10, 2025, in Wellingara, The Gambia from female genital mutilation (FGM). We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and community and unequivocally condemn this intolerable act of violence.
This devastating loss underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement of FGM bans worldwide and community engagement. Recent efforts to weaken existing protections further endanger vulnerable children both in The Gambia and here in the U.S.
FGM is child abuse. It is sexual violence. It must never be tolerated. We call on global and U.S. leaders to strengthen legal protections and enforcement, and stand firm in protecting girls from this abuse.
One girl lost to FGM is one too many.
