Supporters testify in favor of Ohio bill to ban marriage for 17-year-olds – NBC4i

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Dozens of people recently testified in support of an Ohio bill that would ban marriage for anyone under the age of 18, removing a current exception for 17-year-olds who meet certain requirements.

In January, Sens. Bill DeMora (D-Columbus) and Louis Blessing III (R-Colerain Township) introduced Senate Bill 341, which would raise the legal marriage age to 18 in all circumstances.

Presently, 17-year-olds in Ohio may marry after completing premarital counseling, obtaining juvenile court approval and waiting 14 days after the court files consent; parental permission is not required. If one person is 17, the couple may not have an age gap greater than four years. Otherwise, people must be at least 18 to get married.
