Bary’s Parents Ask Judge To Keep Christmas Cards From Daughter

Attorneys for the parents of religious runaway Rifqa Bary on Tuesday asked a judge to stop her attorneys from passing on Christmas cards and other messages from people, prompting UCLA law Professor Eugene Volokh to write that although “custodial parents are indeed entitled to try to restrict speech to their minor children, this power is in practice extremely limited when it comes to 17-year-olds, and it’s not clear to me that it should extend to cases where a 17-year-old child is already outside the parents’ physical custody.”
