Mayo Clinic pediatrician departs amid female genital mutilation controversy

A Mayo Clinic pediatrician whose remarks regarding female genital mutilation ignited online controversy no longer works for Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea. In an Arabic-language paper entitled “Circumcision of Girls: Jurisprudence and Medicine”, Elhagaly had repeatedly pointed “to the idea that female genital mutilation is ‘an honor’ for women.”

“We are working with his patients to transition their care to another physician,” according to a written statement from Mayo Clinic.
