Nigeria Bans Female Genital Mutilation

Nigeria banned female genital mutilation this month, a practice that is estimated to have affected 130 million women and girls in Africa and the Middle East. The ban was the initiative of outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan. The ban is part of a trend of the decline of this practice; UNICEF reported that women are less 1/3 less likely to experience FGM today than they were 30 years ago.
