Our Jewish friends and neighbors have been reminded again today that there are those within our communities who intend to do them harm. Suburban Detroit’s Temple Israel, the largest Reform synagogue in the U.S., was attacked earlier today when a man fired shots at the synagogue after ramming a truck into the building.
In the coming days I am sure that we will learn more about the attacker, who was killed during law enforcement’s response. The details, however, will not change the posture that all decent people share. Antisemitism is on the rise in the U.S. and across the West and the time for opposing it and eliminating it has long passed. Today, the attacker is the only person who died. But this has not been true for dozens of other attacks across the world that have targeted Jews merely for being Jews.
AHA Foundation is committed to standing in solidarity with the Jewish community around the world, but with the Temple Israel congregation in particular today. We must work together to eradicate this type of violence and the corrosive ideas that inspire it.
