The Netherlands Adopts New Policies on Forced Marriage

One of the elements that is rarely discussed about the migrant crisis is the practices of domestic abuse and forced marriage that some migrants bring with them. The Netherlands estimates that 34 child brides have arrived as migrants since January 2014 and estimates that 22 more will arrive in the near future. The Netherlands is currently working on amending legislation that recognizes the marriages of foreign residents if those marriages were legal in their land of origin. New legislation prohibiting any marriage under 18 is set to go into effect in January 2016.
